Ukraine is a country with enormous potential for business. It has rich agricultural and natural resources, good and improving industrial and transportation infrastructure, world-class technology companies, a hardworking and highly educated workforce, and a large and growing consumer market. And it sits today, as it has for centuries, at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
On the flip side, Ukraine’s economic development has been hampered since its independence by sometimes lethargic improvement of its former Soviet industrial base; a post-Soviet legacy of environmental problems; incessant political infighting; consolidation of wealth in the hands of a small group of “oligarchs,” which has slowed creation of true middle class and left too many people still in or close to poverty; and the constant concern of geopolitical domination by its Russian neighbors.
But despite Ukraine’s difficult and sometimes painful transition over the past two decades from a Soviet republic to a democratic state and market economy, progress has clearly been visible. More and more Western companies are seeking and finding investment, partnership and trade or service opportunities in Ukraine. Opportunities exist in Ukraine for Western companies in many industries.
