During a visit to Ukraine by President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan during the first week of December, Ukraine and Tajikistan formalized a number of bilateral agreements between the two countries.  Rahmon held high-level talks with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, which were followed by a formal signing ceremony.

Among the agreements signed by Ukraine and Tajikistan were:

•    Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in Tourism
•    Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in Culture and Arts
•    Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in Physical Education
•    Agreement on Cooperation between Ministry for Agrarian Policy of Ukraine and Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan
•    Agreement on Scientific, Educational and Cultural Cooperation between Kyiv Shevchenko University and Tajik National University

The primary purpose of the Tajikistan delegation’s visit to Ukraine was to tour the Kharkiv Turboatom Plant.  The Tajikistan delegation traveled to Ukraine’s second-largest city to visit the plant and tour the facilities.  The delegation ordered several new turbines for a major power station in their country.
