Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko presided over the opening of the new Kharikiv-Krasnograd-Pereshchepyne highway in the Kharkiv region on August 22, 2008, and stated that the new road, built to European standards, represents Ukraine’s movement toward integration with Europe.
“Today we have made one more step toward building Europe in Ukraine, toward building to European standards,” Timoshenko said. She added that the new road will improve Ukraine’s transportation capability, which in turn will improve trade. She said that it show that Ukraine is able to become a “bridge” for the countries of Europe.
The Kharkiv-Krasnograd-Pereshchepyne highway is significant for Ukraine as it connects a huge segment of a transit road from north to south. The prime minister said that the next step will be to complete the road to the industrial city of Dnipropetrovsk, after which eastern Ukraine will have a complete north-south corridor. She said that the new road is the best “first-category” road in Ukraine.
Timoshenko thanked the construction companies and workers that were involved in construction of the new road. She noted that Ukraine is proving an increased ability to construct high-quality roadways at a reasonable cost and in a short time. She said that the cost to build the Kharkiv-Krasnograd- Pereshchepyne highway was only about a third of the cost to construct an equivalent road in Europe. Whereas one kilometer of highway in Europe might cost approximately US$ 10 million, the average cost for the new highway in the Kharkiv region was only about US$ 3.7 million per kilometer, she said.
