The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine announced the government’s intention to spend UAH 200 million (approximately US$40 million) for the purchase of AN-148 transport aircraft in 2009. The purchases will be made as part of a project organized through a state-run leasing enterprise.
The provision was made in a draft state budget bill for 2009 that has been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s national legislature, indicating that UAH 200 million should be allocated within the framework of a special program budget. According to the bill, the project will support “a domestic manufacturer of advanced technology products” (Antonov Aircraft Company), help Ukrainian airlines update their service fleets, and improve the safety of air transportation in Ukraine.
The Ministry of Industrial Policy has instructed the state-run aviation plant Aviant, based in Kyiv, to begin production of the AN-148 by the fourth quarter of 2008. In addition to Aviant, the Antonov Aeronautical Scientific and Technical Complex is a comprehensive Ukrainian aircraft developer that includes a design bureau, a full complex of test laboratories, an experimental plant, and a test-flight base.
