Ukraine and Poland have received a reprieve from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which continues its support of the two countries as joint hosts for the Euro 2012 football tournament. They were warned, however, to speed up their preparations.
UEFA inspectors produced a critical report of the preparations and infrastructure, but fears that European football’s ruling body would move the finals to another country have been laid to rest. UEFA`s executive committee decided to keep Ukraine and Poland as hosts but told the pair they have to stick to a strict schedule of preparations.
Concerns have been high throughout the summer regarding Ukraine’s and Poland’s ability to complete all necessary construction and improvements to stadiums, airports, accommodations, communications and other necessary infrastructure to support the tournament. The situation has become a matter of national pride for the proposed host nations and, in Ukraine particularly, has resulted in involvement by the highest levels of government.
