The president of Ukraine, Victor Yushchenko, took part in high-level discussions regarding world environmental protection at the 63rd United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, September, 24. He suggested creating a new body within the U.N. that would focus on environmental protection around the world. President Yushchenko said that Ukraine is interested in more active global cooperation in the sphere of ecology.
Yushchenko added that Ukraine would put forth an initiative to develop a framework for a binding agreement, called the World Environmental Constitution, and to establish a system with a single structure for environmental protection. This structure, he suggested, should have the relevant authority and mechanisms within the U.N.
The Ukrainian president also stated his country’s commitments to helping ease the global food crisis and to create an effective and just energy policy within the international body. Ukraine is a leading world producer of grains and other agricultural products, and can play a significant role in balancing world food supplies.
Yushchenko said that the energy policy should be implemented on the basis of mutual benefit, continuous fulfillment of obligations, and the unacceptability of using energy as a device for political pressure. Ukraine has been in difficult financial and geopolitical situations in recent years as it relies on an increasingly unfriendly Russia for the great majority of its energy resources.
