At a news conference on October 3, 2008, the Superior Golf Club of Kharkiv announced the grand opening of a new nine-hole course in Ukraine’s second-largest city.
The director of the club, Yurij Safronov, said that he his team were pleased to announce the opening of the course after many months of hard work to make golf in Kharkiv a reality. He said that it is the first golf course in Kharkiv with the total area of 30 hectares.
The project was designed by a Scottish company and constructed by an American company. Safronov said that more than 800 meters of totally new communication systems in Kharkiv has been built to support the club and that the state government has financed 800 meters of new road. In addition to the golf course, the club plans to add three top-level three tennis-courts on the site.
This new recreational development shows that Ukraine is gradually moving to the list of countries that belong to world of golf. The director of the Kharkiv Golf Club said that operations of the club will commence next spring, and the facility will host its first international tournament later next year.
