The United States Department of Defense has announced that it will allocate $175 million to Ukraine to help strengthen biosecurity and biosafety safeguards in Ukraine. The measures will help Ukraine combat bioterrorism and prevent the proliferation of technologies related to biological weapons. This work will be administered though the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency.
The program will help Ukraine improve and enhance its existing disease surveillance systems in order to detect and report bioterror attacks, epidemics and potential pandemics. Ukraine’s network of medical and veterinary diagnostic laboratories that handle dangerouw pathogens will be improved, and a secure repository will be built to handle and store dangerous pathogens.
An American company, Black & Veatch, has been awarded a contract to perform this work in Ukraine. The company will open an “integrating office” in Kyiv.
