Ukrainian people have been always noted for their wonderful singing and dancing. So it is not surprising that theaters of opera and ballet are still very crowded, even nowadays in the epoch of movies and internet.
You can find an opera house or theater of musical drama in almost every Ukrainian city. Though not all people are fans of classical music, there are still a large number of philharmonic and organ music halls. They are financed mostly by the national government and sometimes by local authorities or philanthropists.
Ukrainians love a good opera. So it should come as no surprise that the world of dance and musical arts in Ukraine has survived the devastation of wars, repressive regimes, and even the severe poverty of the 1990s. Ukrainians’ love of opera, combined with very reasonable prices in most cities, means that even those with meager incomes flock to the opera houses.
Ukrainian opera and ballet theaters offer a great choice of performances. The languages of operas are Ukrainian, Russian, French, English and Italian. And regardless of the language spoken, watching a play in a theater puts you face to face with the culture you want to discover.
The age of audiences varies from five to 95 years old. One of the characteristic features of Ukrainian opera houses is to see small children dressed up in costumes for the performance, even at the most serious performances. They can be seen eating chocolate and enjoying the music.
Many young parents think that children will be more disciplined and polite if they become acquainted with art in early childhood. It’s really amazing, but children in Ukrainian theaters always behave very well.
Certainly opera is a very spectacular performance. But even if you usually fall asleep it’s anyway worth visiting sometimes. You will enjoy the unforgettable atmosphere of the opera house, which in most cities has old, charming designs. The most ancient and beautiful theaters of opera and ballet are in Kyiv, Odesa and Lviv. These three theaters are more than a hundred years old, and the buildings are really impressive.
But the performances are professional in all cities, even the smallest ones. Theater is like good wine: try it once, and you will fall in love with it forever.
