During a November 13 meeting to chart Ukraine’s course through the current financial crisis, President Viktor Yushchenko offered five principles he believes are necessary for Ukraine to safeguard its economy from the effects of a recession in 2009.
Yushchenko’s remarks were delivered during a National Anticrisis Consultive Meeting held in Kyiv. The Ukrainian president suggested the following:
1. The government should focus its attention on the interests of Ukrainian national manufacturers in developing state financial support policies.
2. The government should seek to balance Ukraine’s import-export policies, supporting exporters and cutting unnecessary imports.
3. The government must reduce state expenses.
4. Populist speculations in Ukrainian political circles must stop, and the government should focus on constructive solutions to curb the economic and political crisis.
5. The government should guarantee that social commitments to the citizens will be met.
In addition, Yushchenko urged Ukrainian employers to refrain from major workforce layoffs, taking these actions only when absolutely necessary.
