Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko represented Ukraine in the 4th Annual International Energy Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 15, 2008. The program of the summit included discussion of such important projects as the Euro-Asian oil transport route and Caspian-Black Sea-Baltic Sea energy resources transit space.
Yushchenko said that Ukraine is fully committed to the implementation of the Euro-Asian oil transit route project. Ukraine continues active negotiations with Azerbaijan on conditions to enhance Azerbaijani business work in Ukraine. Also Ukraine is prepared to start construction of a network of gas stations to provide implementation of that part of the project.
Yushchenko added that there are no serious obstacles from the Ukrainian side for the implementation of the Euro-Asian transit route project. As for the Caspian-Black Sea-Baltic Sea energy transit space, the Ukrainian president said that “first of all it should be protected from any attempts of political or other influence and pressure.”
Among positive shifts in the project Yushchenko mentioned the establishment of the Sarmatia Joint Venture Intergovernmental Working Group on Caspian-Black Sea – Baltic Sea energy transit route. He also noted that the project is receiving significant support from the European Union and the United States.
In addition to Ukraine and Azerbaijan, other participants in the summit included Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, Turkey, Hungary, Switzerland, the USA, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and the European Commission.
