New Year Celebration

Ukrainians to Have Seven Days to Celebrate Holidays

By Oleg Lavrentyev, Nova Mova International Programs Manager

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine recommended that managers of most Ukrainian enterprises, governmental institutions and organizations provide at least a week of holidays from New Year Day through Orthodox Christmas Day.  The cabinet urged that “favorable conditions” be created for celebration of the holidays.

The government excepted the banking industry, postal service, state treasury, and the Pension Fund of Ukraine from the expanded holiday observances.  In making the pronouncement, the cabinet suggested that enterprises and other institutions move certain working days from the holiday week to several Saturdays in mid and late January.

Thus, the holidays will officially begin on January 1 and continue through January 7, 2009.  In practice, however, many businesses will cease operations for most of two full weeks, from Monday, December 29, 2008, through Friday, January 9, 2009.  Some companies, especially foreign companies operating in Ukraine, will observe much shorter holiday periods.
