The Central Geophysical  Observatory of the Ministry of Extraordinary Situations has issued a report that lists Ukrainian cities suffering the most severe environmental impacts. It was found that the worst ecological situations are in 24 cities, mostly of which are in the industrialized eastern part of Ukraine.

According the report, Makeevka (Donetsk region), Dneprodzerzhinsk (Dnepropetrovsk region) and Odessa are the “dirtiest cities” in Ukraine.  Oil-refining and other heavy industries, city traffic, and proximity to sea port operations were listed as the main factors for pollution.

The ministry warned that inhabitants of these cities are at serious risk for their health. The added that environmental remediation and other engineering projects could make many of the places safer, but that money and political will are often lacking.

Residents of industrial centers breathe not only dust, but also heavy metals, phenols, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, benzopyrene, nitrogen dioxide, and other hazardous compounds. Many of these compounds are known to cause cancer, and all are dangerous to human health. The Central Geophysical Laboratory registered the most critical levels of atmospheric pollution in the east of Ukraine.

Other cities included on the list include Donetsk, Gorlovka, Dzerzhynsk, Yenakiyevo, Mariupol, Dnepropetrovsk, Lisichansk, Severodonetsk, Kherson, Slavyansk, Rubezhnoye, Yalta, Zaporozhie, Armyansk, Kramatorsk, Lutsk, Khmelnytsky, Uzhgorod, and Krivoy Roh. The worst overall ecological situation is in the Donbass area, which includes the cities of  Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk and Luhansk. It was also noted that Crimea is suffering from serious environmental impacts.

Although, the air quality in Kyiv was reported as better than average, Ukraine’s capital city still found itself in the “ecologically unfavorable” category. According to the data, the air in Kyiv has become clearer than in 2007, and as a result, Kyiv took 29th place in the rating instead of 23rd. But there are some districts in Kyiv where the level of pollution is always high. Among these are the districts of the Bessarabskaya and Moskovskaya ploshchads, the district near the subway stations Shuliavskaya and Tarasa Shevchenko, and also near Prospekt Pobedy.
