Despite language and other differences between the eastern and western parts of the country, Ukrainians believe their country will stay united.
This was the conclusion of a survey conducted by the Gorshenin Institute within the framework of its sociological study, Mass Media and Freedom of Speech. The poll showed that, although Ukrainians acknowledge that a marked difference in language and other cultural aspects exists between eastern and western Ukraine, a majority of Ukrainians do not believe it is possible for the country to split into two separate halves.
According to the results of the poll, only a third of Ukrainians (some 34.8 percent) believe that the divisions between eastern and western Ukraine are serious enough to possibly result in a fracture of the country. At the same time, some 42.8 percent of Ukrainians do not consider this problem to be real. However, the number of those who could not answer the question appeared to be rather high at about 22.4 percent.
According to the institute, the poll confirmed that Ukraine is in fact a bilingual state. Approximately 46.8 percent of those polled said they speak Russian at home, while 49.5 percent said that they speak Ukrainian at home. The rest speak some other language in their homes. The poll had a statistical margin of error of about 2.4 percent.
